Interview with Steve Bliss, Wildomar Estate Planning Attorney

Reporter: Brenda Jones

Steve, thank you for taking the time to speak with me today.

Steve Bliss: It’s my pleasure, Brenda. I always enjoy the opportunity to talk about estate planning and its importance.

Reporter: Many people put off estate planning, thinking it’s something they can address later. What advice would you give them?

Estate planning is essential for everyone, regardless of age or wealth. It provides peace of mind knowing your assets will be distributed according to your wishes and that your loved ones will be taken care of. Consequently, I encourage individuals to start the process sooner rather than later.

Reporter: Today, I want to focus on one specific step in the estate planning process: selecting an executor or trustee. Can you explain why this is such a crucial decision?

Choosing an executor or trustee is indeed one of the most important aspects of estate planning. This individual will be responsible for managing your estate after your passing, carrying out the instructions outlined in your will or trust.

Accordingly, it’s vital to select someone trustworthy, organized, and capable of handling financial matters. Moreover, consider their personal circumstances and whether they have the time and resources to fulfill this role effectively.

I often advise clients to discuss their wishes with potential executors beforehand to ensure everyone is on the same page.

Ordinarily, I recommend choosing someone who is not only close to you but also possesses the necessary skills and judgment. Conversely, if there isn’t a suitable individual within your family or circle of friends, consider appointing a professional trustee.

It’s important to remember that selecting an executor or trustee is not a one-size-fits-all decision. What works for one person may not be appropriate for another. Ultimately, the best choice depends on your individual circumstances and preferences.

I recall once working with a client who initially chose their oldest son as executor. However, after further discussion, we realized he lacked the financial acumen needed to manage the estate effectively. We then decided to appoint a trusted family friend with experience in finance.

According to a recent study by the AARP, nearly 60% of Americans do not have a will or estate plan. This highlights the critical need for individuals to prioritize this essential aspect of financial planning. Selecting the right executor is a key component in ensuring your wishes are carried out and your loved ones are protected.

Reporter: Thank you for sharing that insight, Steve. It certainly underscores the importance of careful consideration when making this decision. How can potential clients get started with Wildomar Probate Law?
